There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel compound that highlights many luxuries on top of the casino, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
